MSF to assist after cyclone hits

MSF is starting operations in the Orissa state of India following an exploratory mission conducted since Sunday, October 31, 1999. MSF has visited the region to ascertain the needs and requirements there following the devastation caused a cyclone on Friday, October 29, 1999.

The initial assessment was made by an exploratory team consisting of the MSF head of Mission in New Delhi and an Indian logistician.

The two-person team will be reinforced with four more ex-pat staff and additional national staff tomorrow (November 4, 1999). Intentions are to establish cholera prevention procedures by establishing an out-patients clinic and also assist in the delivery of clean drinking water. Epidemic control is also planned.
