MSF launched a global petition on 12 November 2015, World Pneumonia Day, calling on pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to reduce the price of the pneumonia vaccine to US$5 per child (for all three doses) in all developing countries and for humanitarian organisations. The ongoing conflict in the North and East of South Sudan are distracting attention from regular healthcare concerns like the malaria epidemic that is affecting the West of the country. Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) teams are running 25 programmes, as well as outreach activities, in nine of South Sudan’s ten states, providing healthcare to people facing crisis, and runs programmes in neighbouring countries like Ethiopia to offer assistance to the South Sudanese refugees. We now have tools - from weather monitoring to close surveillance of new cases - to predict the onset of a malaria peak and a large proportion of severe cases, so shouldn’t we be taking more aggressive preventive measures?
