Every year, around eight million people worldwide fall ill with tuberculosis (TB) and 1.3 million people die from the infectious airborne disease. TB is curable, but an inadequate global response has allowed drug-resistant TB to take a hold.
Veka
Veka, 50 years old, has Extensively Drug-Resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). Last year his condition deteriorated and he had to be hospitalised for seven months. He has been on a new treatment for nine months now, which includes Bedaquiline.
Marta
Marta Askalyan, 51 years old, has Extensively Drug-Resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). She has spent 16 of the past 30 months in hospital. She was treated in Russia before coming to Yerevan in search of effective treatment.
Broyan
Broyan, 41 years old, has Extensively Drug-Resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB). He was diagnosed with TB during routine testing for detainees. He is being treated in Yerevan's prison hospital.
Tatev
Tatev, 17 years old, has Multidrug-Resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). Her treatment consists of 14 pills a day. Her father has MDR-TB too but has refused treatment.
Vardan
Vardan, 60 years old, has Multidrug-rResistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). He was diagnosed with TB 8 years ago. In 2013, he underwent surgery, his left lung was removed.
