Peru's jail population at far higher risk to HIV/AIDS infection

In Lurigancho Penitentiary's medical facilities, MSF treats 65 cases of HIV/AIDS. Chaos and fear returns to Monrovia as ceasefire is tested to its limits

"As we drove back towards the centre of Monrovia we saw thousands more people removing the precious tarpaulin from their shelters and leaving their homes in the only direction possible: away from the sound of fighting. Little children carrying sacks on their heads heavier than their own skinny bodies, old women stumbling with mattresses along the roads, mothers carrying screaming children and bundles of food" - MSF press officer Lucy Clayton is currently stationed in Monrovia, Liberia. Public hospital in Monrovia abandoned again

"Today, we have to decide again whether to reduce our teams," said MSF spokesperson Christopher Stokes. "We are committed to stay with the Liberian population, but have to concede that at a time when their needs are even greater than they were, our capacity to bring lifesaving assistance is again reduced as a result of the violence and insecurity." Life continues - in spite of HIV

"Africa is dying! Protect yourselves against HIV!". This is how the President of Malawi campaigns for the use of condoms. But already almost a million of the near ten million inhabitants of this country are HIV-positive. The educational programs are not helping any longer. They need medical help to survive. In July 2001, Médecins Sans Frontières began to treat HIV/Aids patients with antiretroviral medicines in the Chiradzulu hospital. Dr Norbert Lüneborg reports from this pilot project. Bush to NGOs: Watch your mouths

For aid workers, there are even more strings attached to U.S. dollars. USAID told several NGOs that have been awarded humanitarian contracts that they cannot speak to the media -- all requests from reporters must go through Washington. Mary McClymont, CEO of InterAction, calls the demands "unprecedented," and says, "It looks like the NGOs aren't independent and can't speak for themselves about what they see and think."
